Winter Wonderland: Trail Running in Little Bennett's Icy Embrace (Hike #2)

Hike #2: The crisp air kissed my cheeks, turning them rosy as I laced up my shoes for a winter run at Little Bennett Regional Park. Gone were the vibrant hues of summer, replaced by a stark yet stunning landscape painted in shades of brown and white. My chosen path: a tapestry woven from the Sidewinder, Western Piedmont, and Pine Grove trails, promising a mix of challenge and serene beauty.

First up, Sidewinder. Its namesake slithering curves, usually tackled with joyful abandon, demanded respect today. Each footfall required focus, a mindful dance between momentum and control. Yet, amidst the caution, there was exhilaration. The crunch of my shoes on frosted leaves, the sun dappling through the bare branches, it was a winter wonderland come alive.

Emerging onto the wider Western Piedmont, the wind picked up, carrying the scent of pine. This trail allowed for a more rhythmic stride. Here, the evergreens stood tall and it felt like running through a scene from a Nordic fairy tale, the silence broken only by the rhythmic thud of my feet and the occasional chirp of a brave winter bird.

Finally, Pine Grove unfolded, its namesake trees forming a cathedral of hushed reverence. The sun, lower in the sky, cast long shadows, painting the branches with a golden glow. The trail here was softer, offering a welcome reprieve from the ice. My pace slowed, a sense of tranquil ease settling in. A solitary deer, startled by my approach, bounded gracefully into the woods, the only witness to my peaceful contemplation.

As I finished my loop, the winter sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues. The air, though colder, felt invigorating. This wasn't just a run; it was an immersion in the raw beauty of winter, a reminder of nature's enduring strength and the quiet magic that unfolds when we slow down and embrace the season.

So, if you're looking for an adventure beyond the treadmill this winter, lace up your shoes and head to Little Bennett. Bundle up, mind the ice, and prepare to be enchanted by the park's wintery transformation. Just remember, it's not about speed, but about savoring the journey, one crunchy footstep at a time.

52 Hike Challenge Hike #2 - 4.03 Miles, 1:04:53 / 16:06 per mile

P.S. For those seeking a longer run, consider combining these trails with others in the park's extensive network. Just be sure to check the trail conditions beforehand and plan accordingly. Happy winter running!
